Consulting for companies and research centres developing X-ray imaging systems: image quality and CBCT validation, tomographic reconstruction, geometric calibration of robotic systems, instrumentation and embedded work, and long-term C++ codebase development and maintenance for imaging and industrial machinery.
Image quality assurance on dental and clinical CBCT machines: algorithm parametrisation, phantom and clinical data analysis, exposure control and geometrical validation. After-sales debugging, production acceptance testing, and flat panel detector quality control and comparison to IEC standards. Functional design, back-end implementation, cross-team coordination, and maintenance, refactoring and optimisation of legacy tomographic code for the Neowise suite.
Head of the interdisciplinary Imaging Core Group, a 15-person team responsible for diagnosing and resolving image quality issues and customer complaints. Research and design of state-of-the-art hardware and software solutions; experimental work on optical tracking, flexmap calibration, automatic exposure control, in-room robotic navigation and stereotaxis, MLG detector calibration and Factory Acceptance Test verifications. Led tomographic code development (~5 people), post-processing filter implementation, and owned software documentation for the Cone Beam CT module.
Design and development of a custom robotic C-arm for in-room X-ray imaging at the CNAO particle therapy centre: full-stack C++ development of the patient positioning verification suite, 9-degree-of-freedom geometric calibration (flexmap approach), integration with the treatment room infrastructure, cone-beam tomographic reconstruction, and clinical commissioning of the instrument. Oral presentation at CT-meeting 2022.
Alongside this research, I was a teaching assistant for three M.Sc. courses at Politecnico di Milano: Computer-Aided Surgery, Laboratory of Radiotherapy Technologies, and Electronics Technologies and Biosensors Laboratory, and supervised or co-supervised four M.Sc. and B.Sc. theses on adaptive radiotherapy, 4D cone-beam CT and CBCT reconstruction and scatter correction.
Monte Carlo simulations of particle transport in cone-beam CT, distributed computing on a Linux/Slurm platform (in2p3), scatter simulation and correction, and development of novel acquisition geometries. Open-source contributions to the RTK and OpenGATE projects.
X-ray imaging, computer vision and robotics for robot-assisted interventional radiology, with development in C++ and MATLAB.
M.Sc. thesis on X-ray image-guided pose estimation of a tool for robotic needle guidance, from radiographs acquired by a robotic C-arm; B.Sc. thesis on a table-bound play robot for motion-impaired children. Followed by a Ph.D. in Bioengineering (2019-2024, cum laude) on technologies for in-room image guidance in hadron therapy.
